Protocol

Media

Creative Director May 2021 – December 2022

Joining Protocol and returning to journalism meant pausing my sojourn into other design disciplines. But their Editor-in-Chief, Head of Product, and President offered me an opportunity I couldn't refuse — lead and expand the young digital media's editorial and brand vision. Unfortunately, Protocol dissolved as it found its stride. I loved my time at Protocol, participating in every editorial and business aspect, including CMS production, UX/UI improvements, events production, and customer success (sponsor) programs.

Below is a selection of my creative direction and story art for its coverage:

Callisto Media

Art Director December 2017 – August 2018

Callisto was a book publisher with a Silicon Valley "big data" mindset. At the time, they were seeking someone to develop a rapid production program (à la fast fashion for books), thus I adapted my 14 years of daily newspaper production knowledge towards their needs. I also implemented a photo program to improve their cookbooks with original, yet budget-friendly, documentary photography after discovering cost and production inefficiencies in heavily modifying stock food images for cookbooks with specific dietary needs.

I'm proud of all my Callisto book designs. But I especially love my art and photo direction for the bestseller, Bread Baking for Beginners. I was genuinely surprised when actress Jenna Fischer (The Office) posted photos of herself baking recipes from the book.

Houston Chronicle

San Francisco Chronicle

Designer and Illustrator January 2004 – December 2005

Senior Designer and Illustrator December 2005 – December 2017

After two years at a pre-Pandora/Spotify streaming music "dotcom" (WiredPlanet) and some graduate courses at SFSU, I joined Hearst newspapers as a designer and illustrator at the Houston Chronicle and San Francisco Chronicle. Some senior editors glanced over my digital design and tech background. Nevertheless, I participated in developing new products for mobile devices, while art directing and designing their staple print sections — Food + Home, Style, and Business Report, including quarterly themed magazines. I would also contribute video/board game reviews and trend stories.

Examples below demonstrate my range as a graphic designer, illustrator, animator, and art/photo director:

🏆 Congratulations! 🏆

You found an easter egg in my portfolio! This "front page" was actually produced for the tv show, Monk!
